Emerging Ozone Therapy Research
Ozone has been used for a wide variety of treatment modalities ranging from peripheral vascular disease, macular degeneration, cutaneous and mucosal infections, and even ulcerative colitis (1). Substantial research has also pointed to the efficacy of ozone therapy for disc herniation and low back pain. A systematic review and meta-analysis performed by Francisco N. et al in 2012 provided extensive literature review of articles discussing ozone therapy for low back pain secondary to herniated discs from 1966- Sept 2011. Overall, the study concluded that paravertebral, periforaminal, and intra-disc Ozone therapy would be an effective treatment for low back pain secondary to disc herniation in cases where conservative treatment options were unsuccessful (2).
However, the most current literature is investigating the utilization of Ozone therapy in the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis. A study published in the European Journal of Pharmacology examined the effects of intra articular Ozone injections on PG/PS-induced arthritis in rats. After 10 days of PG/PS (Peptidoglycan/ Polysaccharide Polymer) administration, histological evidence revealed arthritis development. The test group was injected with .2ml of Ozone/Oxygen mixture 3 times per week for 24 days. The results yielded significant decreases in the Total Arthritis Index, as well as decreases in Ankle thickness. It was concluded that Ozone decreased inflammation and joint injury, reduced inflammatory cytokines, and re-established a cellular redox balance. The pleotrophic effects of Ozone treatment revealed in PG/PS induced arthritis has shed light on Ozone’s therapeutic efficacy in Rheumatoid arthritis, and warrants further clinical trials and experimental models to investigate other administration routes and protective benefits (3).
